4 Steps to Apply the Critical Chain Method

The Develop Schedule process, which marks the 6th step of Time Management Knowledge Area’s Time Management Knowledge Area, organizes the outputs from the Time Management processes and produces the final schedule for the project. This is the main output of the Develop Schedule process. It’s now time to analyze the schedule once it has been created. The schedule network analysis will follow. It can take many forms, or it can be applied with multiple analysis methods, as described in the PMP training course. Critical Chain is one of these methods.

Critical Path Method vs. Critical Chain Method
As you may have guessed by its name, Critical Chain Method is related with Critical Path Method. Before we explain what Critical Chain Method is let’s briefly recall what Critical Path Method was. Once we had established the relationship between project activities, we connected these activities to create a network schedule. Next, we needed to determine the critical path.
Eliyahu M.Goldratt developed the Critical Chain Method. CCM has a different approach to Critical Path. Let’s compare the two approaches.
First, a network diagram must be created using the Critical Chain Method. The second step is to create the schedule. Each activity should be assigned a time so that it meets the end date. The third step involves adding the resource dependencies. The critical chain is then calculated.

The Advantages
But why use Critical Chain Method? What are the benefits of Critical Chain Method? We all know that you won’t have unlimited project resources. These resources could be people, equipment, and physical space. Even if there is no mandatory dependency between the activities and the resources, the same resource might perform the activities. This creates a dependency between resources. All of these dependencies should be considered in the critical chain method.

Important: Critical tasks should be given buffers in this method. What is the purpose of this? To create a realistic schedule that is achievable, you must consider the risks involved in project activities.
